STRIVE Graduate, Class #6
Currently Employed, Teaching English as a Second Language in China
|
|
In February 1998, David was laid off of work and decided to enroll in the Second Chance STRIVE program - class #6. Inspired by the STRIVE training, David applied for work at Rosa
Parks Elementary School as an aide and he took prerequisites for a teaching degree. He graduated from SDSU in May 2001 and went on to receive his teaching credential in January 2003.
Having a personal interest in Japanese and Chinese culture and languages, David jumped at the chance to take a position teaching English as a second language to high school and adult college students in China. David boarded a flight for
Shanghai on August 21, 2006 and continues to teach and live in China.
When asked about the value of his STRIVE experience he states: "I gained a deep sense of confidence through connections with others like myself as we practiced interviewing strategies, acting on film, and visualizing ourselves in an ideal
job. They helped me believe that I could really achieve my dream and I did."
