Profile/Story
John Baca

John Baca needed a new environment. A place where he could stay away from the pressures and influences that might cause him to stray from the sobriety he had finally gained through his second completion of CRASH (a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program). After his first time, he had opted not to enter into a sober living environment, and his relapse was the painful result. Now, there was no way he wanted to fall into the same pattern of his past mistakes.

John has also held the same job for two years, working at another residential rehabilitation center as a security guard, and he would like to become a manager of one of the Second Chance houses if that opportunity presented itself.

Seeking a supportive, clean housing option while working at Wal-Mart to try to make ends meet, John was referred to Second Chance by a friend who also went through CRASH and was situated in a Second Chance Sober Living Home. After speaking with a Second Chance housing manager, he was referred to Hartley House Manager Mike Hebert, who brought John into an SD Housing Trust Fund sponsored bed for 15 days.

John found the sober living home to be an ideal foundation for approaching an effective recovery. With the support and friendship of other residents also in recovery, he was able to stay strong and sober. This, coupled with his return to CRASH for the third phase of his program, became the key to a recovery that might not have happened in a different environment.

John has been in the Second Chance Sober Living program for two years now, moving from the Hartley House to the Bancroft House, where he has been living for about nine months. John has also held the same job for two years, working at another residential rehabilitation center as a security guard, and he would like to become a manager of one of the Second Chance houses if that opportunity presented itself.

Most importantly, though, he has been completely clean and sober during this entire time. John has three daughters and looks forward to regaining custody of them as soon as he can afford his own residence. And thanks to his time in Second Chance’s housing program, he has been able to save money and is happily coming ever closer to that goal.
