Garden Fence

Ribbon Cutting

Saturday, January 20 marked a momentous occasion as donors, friends, and community partners gathered at Second Chance to unveil the long-anticipated Youth Garden Fence. Years in the making, the event was a celebration of collaboration and dedication.

The ceremony kicked off with a profound blessing of the garden by the Kumeyaay nations, featuring moving songs and prayers led by Blue Eagle Vigil and Councilman LaBrake. The spiritual ambiance set the tone for the rest of the day.

Moving indoors to the Second Chance headquarters, guests were treated to a culinary experience crafted by Chef Donovan and Chef Charlie. Using fresh produce from the garden, they delighted attendees with a delectable beet salad and potato leek soup.

The highlight of the event was the reveal of four stunning panels that will soon grace the fence along Imperial Ave. These panels pay homage to the Kumeyaay, African American Heritage, Asian farmers, and Chicano & Hispanic Heritage. The talented panel artists, Katie Ruiz and Kim Pea, along with Farm Stand artist Chris Schaie, were honored for their remarkable contributions.

Speeches by CEO/President of Second Chance Bill Payne, Second Chance Board Member Mitch Bradley, and Second Chance Youth Garden Program Manager Daria Van Nice resonated with the audience, adding a heartfelt touch to the proceedings.

The climax came with the ceremonial ribbon cutting in front of the beautiful panels, eliciting cheers and applause from the gathered crowd. Even the rain couldn't dampen the spirits of guests who ventured to the farm stand, where they purchased items, further supporting the vibrant Second Chance community.

The Youth Garden Fence Ribbon Cutting Event was more than just a milestone; it was a testament to the power of community, art, and perseverance. The legacy of this event will undoubtedly thrive in the heart of Second Chance.  Thank you to all who attended!
